The programming and practice of development interventions has evolved significantly in the new millennium. The last decade has witnessed a growing awareness among development practitioners to innovate and learn from experiences while adhering to the utmost levels of accountability and transparency. Development institutions today are far more cognizant of the need for objective planning, efficient implementation and effective delivery of development outcomes. These advances have accentuated the need for responsive Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) systems to be instituted within organizations, projects and other interventions. An appropriately designed and executed M&E system not only facilitates greater learning and reflection, it also helps institutions in building greater ownership among all stakeholders by improving upstream and downstream communication. It is therefore imperative for development practitioners to familiarize themselves with the ‘nuts & bolts’ of M&E.
